This Supergroup is a thick sequence of shales, quartzites and conglomerates. The lower part of the West Rand Group is characterized by thick layers of shaley material with interstitial quartzites. As time passes shale layers weather faster than the harder quartzites which then forms prominent ridges. Thick layers of quartzite are a common phenomenon on the northern side of the ridges that run generally in a east-west direction on the West Rand.Only one rock type, namely quartzite, could be identified by its surface characteristics on stand 138. This quartzite has a tan to reddish colour which is prominent on the eastern side of the property. The quartzite band continues on the western side of William Nicol Drive.The quartzite band dips steeply towards the south at an angle of generally 80 or slightly more.
